    January 2, 2010

First painting of the year! My father sent me a slew of pictures of his surroundings. Photographs of Dollywood in winter and the antique couches at my grandmother’s house. One of these paintings is the photo of a farm. Used as reference for this picture. I had seen Fantastic Mr. Fox that day (it was Christmas, I now remember) and the farm scene spoke to me, reminding me of Mrs. Foxes paintings of lightning storms striking toward similar pastoral landscape. Today, I added the horse. I was thinking about what I like about art, about Craola and spirit animals  that make me feel serene and looked after, and inspired.

During this process, I had a hard time exacting the eye, and then the muzzle, and created these odd lines instead of bean shapes and decided to run with that texture for the rest of the figure.

  • Breakfast

    December 30, 2009

What a feeling: when you’re sitting at a breakfast table and someone shows you a perfectly absurd object. This pair of porcelain Siamese are back lit, shining on the red kitchen paint, casting an eerie glow over your oat groat.

  • Portrait of Woman

    December 28, 2009

Inspired by a conversation with Charlie about What is under the Mona Lisa painting and what would be painted over it. When paintings are painted over, are they ever lost?

Homage to Leonardo Da Vinci and Frida Kahlo.

  • Do you See what I see?

    December 26, 2009

There is an art to the ink blot. There is a skill to the Rorschach making. It’s funny to see things in something where there was no intended. It’s magical in ways. Charlie, Dan and I improved our blotting skills. Note the distinct improvement between the first and the last of each one. Lessons learned, etc. The elusive line was acheived with a little bit of experimenting and a fresh eye. Some of the shapes are serendipitous. Cannot be taught.

  • Wisp

    December 17, 2009

New triptych. I painted over two of the Counterfactual panels. I had to keep one. Turns out to go nicely with my newest inclination. I also had to add the version with flash because it seems so lighty. And poppy.

Decorating for Yule Party. Thought of Thomas Kinkade, but more wispy. And deer.
