Another VV find. I really like how impressionistic the background turned out. Sometimes my desire to just put paint on the canvas with pure tube colors reallymakes something pop. And then I am inspired by the background to make the rest of it.

    mactree

I met a guy named Mac. He has a beautiful sense of design. I took some notes on his artifacts and perhaps they could be included into future works.

    Graphic Design

    Stylized sun bursts

    weaved photographs from mexico

    dart board

red indian/chinese/victorian rugs… what kind of rugs are they? Persian?

    light colored wood and white

  • Garden State

    May 30, 2009

Largeman'sNecklaceI’ve been feeling kind of lonely lately. I happen to be thinking about someone who likes Garden State as much as I do. I thought I would make this and somewhere out there he might be thinking of the movie and we have a connected mind for at least a moment. Maybe one day I’ll give this to him. Maybe one day he’ll invite me to his birthday party. I like taking nice things from my favorite movies and painting them. When drawing or painting something, there’s a new intimacy with that object. All that time just looking at it, understanding angles, colors, curves, almost transcendental.

  • Chrysanthemum

    May 30, 2009

Journey of a Canvas: I watched my flower wither. I wached this Canvas capture the lightness not by being a bright canvas but highlighting. I read the Portable Magritte before finishing this. The heart inset is inspired by Magritte’s style of taking landscapes and juxtapozing them in into shapes.

  • Rabbit Redux

    May 29, 2009

The Hills from Scottie’s photograph in England + tree +  rabbit + what I tried to be a golden chrysanthemum = this. Something about slight gloom I like.

  • Purple Tree

    purple tree

This little guys seem kind of boring, but at the same time, elegant and fun and maybe they’ll connect into a horizon line of spaced out trees. I don’t like the idea of cluttering these mini-paintings. VV find. I like the little metal handle at the top. I love purple.

  • Mirror

    May 29, 2009

    mirror

Another VV find. I used the same steps to create the background as for “Rabbit.” The trees in this one needed two sizes of brushes to make them pop. The figure needed to be off to one side to offset the composition. Didn’t want it to be too symmetrical. I’ve never painted a mirror frame before. I like its photogenic qualities. Haha… I can really see myself in this one.

  • Using Photographs

    May 29, 2009

I like it. It helps give depth and color. This painting also kind of shows how much more round shapes are in my head (and my preferable aesthetic for nature.
