    July 28, 2016

July has been a month of travelling and shifting for me. August will be a weird one too. Going to Seattle and Wisconsin for my sister’s wedding festivities.

    A Portrait of West Oakland

I got a new job working at a chocolate factory thanks to a fellow auditioner for the sf neofuturists. Right on time, too. My deadline for moving out of Redwood City came upon me. I stayed in Oakland for a week with Cassidy and then when I needed it, I met a woman at her domicile and now we’re living together in Oakland. We nicknamed the domicile/studio Satchmo. She’s a creative person, too.

Satchmo is magical, from the rainbow-star room (discoball and crystals reflect sunlight in the afternoon) to the sound room (a padded room just for recording audio!).

I also signed up for a residency program at SAFEhouse for the Arts in San Francisco. I have a show coming up in exactly 2 months! I’m nervous but excited. It’s something ASMR-based.

    Artist Statement

    Katarina Countiss

Katarina Countiss (Honolulu, United States) makes paintings and drawings. By exploring the concept of landscape in a nostalgic way, Countiss creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles.

Her paintings establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on concrete questions that determine our existence. By applying a poetic and often metaphorical language, she investigates the dynamics of landscape, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what landscape means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination.

Her works appear as dreamlike images in which fiction and reality meet, well-known tropes merge, meanings shift, past and present fuse. Time and memory always play a key role. By applying abstraction, she wants to amplify the astonishment of the spectator by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil poetic images that leave traces and balances on the edge of recognition and alienation.

Her works doesn’t reference recognisable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. Katarina Countiss currently lives and works in San Francisco.~

I’m enjoying working bigger than postcard size. I like the movement in these works. It feels like there’s a world alive with emotion. I’m looking forward to making more leaf-like shapes with the sprinkles. That seems really successful in “Sentiment and Logic,” that and the black shapes create a nice sense of depth.

I enjoyed this process. I’m curious how to hang these. I really like the effect of the under painting coming through the starry pattern when back lit. I’m wondering how to achieve that effect in a gallery setting. That would be lovely if there were no cords– I don’t want a painting I have to plug in, but I’d also like to have an off mode, too. I will have to ask my electronic savvy friends for an instruct-able.

I’m starting to play with the border edge in these pieces for the #cosmicbunny series. I use brown, black, green, purple, and blue to create a dark base. Use the magic pen to create a texture and a figure with props (bunny with boom boom is common). Then, like filling out a multiple choice test, I fill in the ovals that are like imperfect rice grains swirling around in a two dimensional world, employing a variety of approaches. I like the starry night feel of the swirls and I am wondering what other shapes I can make with the impressionistic technique.

The title of this work is “Overwhelming Sky.” You can see the process of creating this work in layers and stages. Using a method to create a tangible pattern with first finding the stars and flowers in the pattern and then coloring outward in an orderly fashion, I created an impressionistic piece with a downward movement.

  • Whirls Process

    June 3, 2016

Title of piece: “Uplifting Impression of Mind-Bending Resignation” Turns out there’s an Abstract Art Title Generator. http://noemata.net/pa/titlegen/

    process-whirls

I’m still working with the magic pens, discovering new effects. I’m intrigued by the layers. Recently, I’ve worked with the “confetti effect” and I thought about how to organize the coloring of the little rice-sized marks. Creating a coast and then following it with different colors is one way. Random is always an option. I like it when there are little pools or clusters of color (seen in this piece on the right bottom, that form interesting shapes. Using bright colors in the background and foreground flattens the work. In other pieces (like the one below), I’ve used duller/darker colors in the first layer and then brighter specks in the second layer, creating what I consider to be a glistening water surface effect.
