  • The One-Minute Introduction (1 min project)

    January 18, 2015

    intro 001

I’m getting together a list of assignments that turn into 1-minute of something to show. It’s less overwhelming than trying to get “songs” together.

In a world where everyone is a photographer and an autobiographer (at least and I can tell because I’m on FB), we have plenty to show each other. Stuff we’ve made, overheard, thought about… it could be anything. I want to create a variety show where every minute something new is happening. Let’s get started. Most of these will start out as writing assignments.

First writing assignment: create the 1 minute or less verbal introduction for yourself. Include a sentence at the beginning that reads “I am [insert-name-here], I go by [blank] and I consider myself to be a [blank].” Include likes, dislikes (please list all of the food you would pick out of a homemade dinner<-this is important to me, but I might be the only one.), a hobby that you love, a hobby that could one day make you money and a hobby that makes you get outside the house. something about the past, present and future and what you will do tomorrow. The goal is to create an elevator pitch that describes who you might be to a team.

Try not to think of it as selling yourself. Just be honest. I think the only thing that really turns people off is the idea that they are being sold.

Average time it takes to complete the assignment: 10 min.

Bonus Points: If you send it to me.

  • To Do List- Saturday of KIS-weekend15

    January 17, 2015

To Do List. If you haven’t used this, I made it for ease of use. Try it out. I like it.

    todaystodo

I have a visiting friend from San Francisco. I have pending projects. I have a plan.

I love seeing these to do lists because for a moment, I feel in control. Everything is about to happen and I know what it is. That’s pretty cool.

    (This is process)

  • Blog Post template blank (FMBP)

    January 15, 2015

    insert-awesome

Hypothesis: By requiring a picture for every blog post I can challenge my creativity.
    Methodology: blog post pics
Parameters: none if you don’t need it, if you do, how about 1280px by 800px

    start time: 1:35pm
    end time: 1:51pm

    idea skeleton:

I couldn’t make a blank one without explaining my new hypothesis which is making “blank ones” isn’t easy when you want to come up with a fun placeholder image. But, this will serve as a template until I get tired of it, so that’s good. I think.

Created during FMBP session: Funky gif at Free Online Animated GIF Maker – Make A GIF Easily. I used it because it was faster than figuring it out and that’s always been my process.

I used a christmas card design I had in the most recent scans pile and layers of gradient, mouse-drawn-text and blending modes to create something that would change colors in unexpected ways, making the image pop and the process transparent.

  • New Process, Using Time to Distill (FMBP)

    January 15, 2015

IMG_8461[1]I’m starting a new chapter of creative process and it’s characterized by the FMBP (Five Minute Blog Post)

Hypothesis: five minutes of focused reflection fuels motivation.
    Methodology: blog posts
Parameters: aim for just five minutes, if you go over, that’s fine (that’s good actually, it means you want to document something which is a good instinct generally)

    Template

    start time: 11:25am
    end time: 11:30am
    idea skeleton:

How can the experimenter test on herself? I am not sure. My favorite scientist and most intense sounding board is someone that is a big skeptic. When I presented this test, he said that he couldn’t complete the thought because it was self-referential in such a loop. Meta and in it and the same time. I thought that was a good enough of an accomplishment.
summarize what I did: Measure what 5 minutes can do for my blogging endeavors.
summarize what I’m going to do next: Continue testing.

  • New Format: the Five Minute Blog Post

    January 15, 2015

    5minuteblogpost

I went to post something on my blog and saw these stats and was a little surprised. Shall I extrapolate an increase by tomorrow? What if I post something new?

I have five minutes to write and 1 minute to find a picture that I own.

I have to summarize (read: can’t list everything without my time running out) what I did today (1) and what I’ll start on tomorrow (read: actionable I can get started immediately) (2) so I can keep a little of the momentum I have going on.

    1. Created Book of Hypotheses method to make all good ideas actionable. A big problem that I was having was that I felt I was thinking a lot of “truths” without validating them in any way whatsoever. Who says I need to keep my experiments a secret?

[{ <– will be the official emoticon for all things BOH related. (BOH=Book of Hypotheses)

    2. Type up the notes from today’s session. #futureyouwillknowwhatyoumean #vaguedetails allow UX stories to be told in real time without getting NDAs involved. Non-disclosure agreement – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. #hyperlinksarebonuspointsandimkeepingtrackhere  [{ hyperlinktotalpoints1

  • Retrospective Introspective Selfie Fest 2014

    December 12, 2014

I’m having a stellar time finding new and old things I enjoy. This year has been a wonderful ride and I am looking forward to next year’s exciting moments. This might have been the first year where my creating has outpaced my ability to blog every awesome moment, so here’s a snapshot of my year.
    yearofgrowth12

    December

I aspired to be a post-modern Dr. Seuss drawing maker and comedic improviser.

    yearofgrowth11

    November

I went in two directions. An organic growth and a repeating pattern.

    yearofgrowth10

    October

I rediscovered my love of comic moments and short hair.

    yearofgrowth9

    September

I became a kaleidescope inspired video-collage artist. I held one person art+rock parties with myself. It’s the most fun I have by myself.

    yearofgrowth8

    August

A friend of mine received a beautiful shell painting that I enjoyed making. I went to see Arcade Fire at the Gorge Amphitheater. A magical month.

    yearofgrowth7

    June

I quit my job. I made a little saying to cheer me up. I used facepaint to express myself. Looking back on it, I feel like I didn’t have to try to be a sweetheart shamaness. That’s just what came out.

    yearofgrowth5

    May

I made a calla lily acrylic painting for my mom for mother’s day. I also joined a local makerspace. Fun place. Interesting people.

    yearofgrowth4

    April

Made a comic style scratchboard and memo holder as a fun birthday present for one of my closest friends. So sweet. I died my hair purple, my favorite color. It was awesome.

    yearofgrowth3

    March

On a whim, I picked up some scratchboards and felt the satisfying push of a wooden stylus over a canvas, revealing the hidden glory. I also went on a cabin trip into the woods to appreciate nature.

    yearofgrowth2

    February

I enjoyed talking to people about black holes and moleskin notebooks. I made hand-drawn modern greeting cards.

    yearofgrowthJanuary

I was a multimedia designer at Ada’s Technical books with some fun little comic stories about a penguin that traveled by balloon.
