An interesting class, combining the two sections of graphic design students, but two teachers to accomodate.

We discussed Suitcase Fusion 3 mostly. Discussing its limitations and applications. Joe, the  hyphen boy, apparently infamous to be very passionate about hyphens in design. Hyphens of all fonts, the kinds with the little swirl at each end.

Braille is a font option. But what about the fonts in Braille? Shouldn’t there be more options for those who can’t see? Spikes vs. rounded bumps, perhaps?

  • Type History Blur

    January 6, 2012

Today, the soft spoken Jill monologued about her childhood history with the most colorful teacher and how she wants to continue to strive to be as involved in teaching as she was. Though Jill didn’t dawn any historical costumes, she did bring in metal letters. They were passed around the classroom and while we examined the feel of type between our fingers, she waxed poetically about how materials available affected letter making. Papyrus, codex, chisel, pen nib, vellum, scriptorium, carved wood, copperplate gravings.

We took a tour of the North Plaza which included the silkscreening area, the letter press stuff and some machines that make polymer stamps. All of this as my classmate who had been there before should have wowed me and it did, but it also intimidated me. There is so much I don’t know. I’ve been playing with paint too long perhaps.

We discussed how this quarter will go down. I have chosen/been assigned a creative brief for Sutherland Creative, which will determine the designs for the next 12 weeks.

  • Day Zero

    January 6, 2012

I could hardly call the first day of class, the first day of class. Marc, the chairman of the graphic design program waltzed in with his usual swagger and told the class that he had invented a Mr. Hoppy and he’s going to be teaching photoshop next week. Meanwhile, he said, we work on this special project (in my mind, I am thinking that this is a babysitting type project, something to busy ourselves). Most of the class dispersed slowly after he announced he come back later to check on us.

Assignment: “Create a detailed map of your journey to the graphic design program. Your solution should be 15×20. Your final solution must include your name. Print your solution in Color and mount it flush on foam core. E-mail me a .pft of your solution. Due 9am next week.”

The first few hours after getting an assignment, I think of a lot of boundaries. What is the core of the assignment and how can I make this assignment fun by stretching the assignment to include what I would find to be interesting?

I made thought map about the assignment and what I could put into it. What are some map types? What are some journey types? Spritual, stylistic, physical? The assignment says “detailed” map. What are some map details? Legends, keys, color codes. This is essentially an autobiographical assignment. What is unique to me? What art classes have I taken? What metaphors can I utilize?

I discussed the assignment with some of my peers and jokingly suggested something, but then I decided to do that.

On my whay home, I saw this structure. I was struck by it. What is the purpose of its shape other than to intrigue me?

    Update 1-9-12:

Here’s my execution of the assignment for the map of my journey. After a lot of thought, I decided to make a nice sweet simple poster. Nothing too offensive or witty about it. It’s a word map.

  • Flowers

    January 1, 2012

Happy New Year. I made this painting this morning after having some breakfast and taking a walk. These are flowers sitting on my dining room table.

  • Color Practice

    December 23, 2011

Today, color was involved. Pete and I went at some paper with watercolor crayons and woodless color pencils and ink. We played the game where each of us took turns drawing lines and coloring in shapes until we had something. Watching the pigment from the crayons melt with water was fascinating, that same enchantment when one finds brown milk after a bowl of cocoa puffs.

Here, we decided to paint some triangles with acrylic. It is an interesting painting to me because you can see we are having a conversation with triangles and disagree.

  • Drawing Practice

    December 22, 2011

Pete B. and I had a little drawing session today. We missed Claire’s drawing exercises, both agreeing that those exercises yielded some deep satisfaction that all the posters we made didn’t. We started by trying out some newfangled pen nibs, the kind that are designed to control the flow of ink. We made these drawings together by playing a drawing game where each person takes turns drawing one line at a time until a picture emerges, then adding elements until there is a certain level of repleteness that both drawers agree on. It felt very much like a game of Go.

After those drawings, we went outside and drew from life (Claire always said to do that) and we drew the view from a nearby park. Here’s my drawing of the boats nearby.

  • Hollow

    December 18, 2011

I had a hollow feeling today. The urge to create now that I have time freed up after school projects commencing and time beginning to stretch out into the blur of the next two weeks. I don’t want to let myself become passive and sleepy while I wait for the next quarter’s assignments to motivate me. Nor can I force myself to create interesting paintings.

    Update later that day:

I added some yellowish brown watered down and decided that I loved it too much to add anything else. Brave and foolish people take a nice background and try to improve upon it.

  • Paula’s Mix CD

    December 5, 2011

Over the weekend, Dan and I made this mix for a Christmas Gift. Today I designed the cover art. This mix is very pleasant, relaxing violin and piano melodies. I wanted to present a modern twist on a classic Debussy sound. I was going to supplant it with lots of Amelie soundtrack songs, but I really like what I found instead, featuring tracks by Tom Waits, Nine Inch Nails and Jason Webley.

    01. Hey Marseilles – Cities 02. Radiohead -NoSurprises 03. Jason Webley – Evelyn Evelyn Theme 04. Radiohead – Let Down 05. Hey Marseilles – Marseilles 06. Jason Webley – Sandy’s Theme 07. DeVotchKa – The Oblivion 08. Tom Waits – Poor Edward 09. Philip Glass – Massman 10. The Decemberists – Cocoon 11. Marketa Irglova – The Hill 12. Tom Waits – Alice 13. Nine Inch Nails – 13 Ghosts II 14. Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien 15. Sufjan Stevens – Concerning The Ufo Sighting Near Highland
