    July 20, 2011

Super lazy today. Didn’t even bother with the details… or cropping it nicely.

  • Tree

    July 20, 2011

I enjoyed yesterday’s tree so much, I made another one to hang in my living room.

  • Game Design Process: Moodboards

    July 19, 2011
Small version of moodboard1 for Pirate Game
Small version of moodboard1 for Pirate Game

Today, I made these moodboards for the Pirate Game (better name TBD). The game developers and I have had a few meetings together already. We mentioned some games with a look and feel that we want to be inspired by (like the card game, Guillotine).

After making these initial moodboards, but before presenting them to the developers, I gave them the prompt: “My teachers recommend: For the look and feel, come up with 5 adjectives.”

I received the list from one of them with these adjectives: Zany, Fairytale-esque, Over-the-top, humorous, clear.

I think I did a fairly good job addressing that. Two different versions. (didn’t want to overwhelm them. I like the first one– heavily inspired by Ralph Steadman– but we talked about guillotine’s direction too, so I made the second one.) More can be made easily. I don’t think that the first version addresses “fairy-tale-esque” but maybe we can add the illuminated manuscript elements from the second moodboard to to the first.

I asked him “What does ‘clear’ mean to you?”

  • Waterfall

    July 19, 2011

Another Hawaiian waterfall. I desperately need to go on a hike. Perhaps paint from real life instead of photographs.

  • The Memories of Man

    July 19, 2011

Painting with Matt. We inspire each other. Here’s his painting. The quote in the painting “History is a cyclic poem, written upon the memories of man.” by Percy Shelley.

  • Tree

    July 19, 2011

A painting commission based on an older painting. It’s interesting that because how long it’s been since I painted this, I don’t have the same paintbrushes or mindset that I did then. But, I enjoyed it and the process.

  • Waterfall

    July 18, 2011

I was thinking what I could paint endlessly and find deep satisfaction after each version of a concept. I have painted many waterfalls and many more to go. Here’s one for today… a three-tiered Hawaiian waterfall.

  • Harnessing the Power of Productive Obsessions

    July 17, 2011

Brainstorm .Harnessing the Power of Productive Obsessions
By Maisel, Eric (Book – 2010)

Summary: Eric Maisel talks about how “productive obsessions” change the way people think very literally. An obsession has a bad reputation for being something that motivates people to do great things that require intense focus and devotion. Maisel encourages all of us to tackle a task head on, devote a part of your life to it.

Review: Though most of the book reads like a self-help client testimony compilation, this book frames the notion of creativity in a way that is most effective (I think). It’s not about trying new things, but investing more in the stuff you already are tasking your brain to think about. I would love to explore the dynamics of obsession more and see how they can be channeled into a creative path that is more like a current than a staircase.

    Rating: 7 neuron clouds

Wine-pairing:  Velvet Goldmine (1998)A reporter’s obsession takes him down a path of glam rock, mystery and identity.
