    currytemple

I was at an interview this week (for a graphic design job) where they asked for more print exemplifying my layout skills, to which I only had a brand manual to point them to. Two weeks ago I was walking along and saw this Episcopalian church that said “Curry Temple…” and I thought, what a cool name for a restaurant. So begins a branding/print collateral design project that I am really excited about. Items to include: menu, logo, brand manual, business cards, stranger (Seattle alternative weekly) ads? and if I get farther with that, a website with an online menu. I haven’t done that before and I certainly look at a lot of online menus. :D

So far I have some color palette ideas as well as mood. Slogans are fun. I am surprised I didn’t make up more while I was in school. I’m favoring “Taste Ancient Wisdom.”

  • Seattle Creative Recruiters

    August 23, 2013

    24/7

    Allovus.

Digital, Creative, and Marketing Talent : Aquent.

    Creative Circle > Home.

Filter – The West’s leading digital solutions agency.

    MAQ Consulting | Home.

IT Recruiting – IT Staffing Agency – Modis.

smartdept. inc. :: creative staffing :: seattle + chicago.

Creative Staffing Agency in Seattle | The Creative Group.

Seattle Staffing | Seattle Staffing Agency | TRC Staffing Services. (Can you figure out this website? I certainly can’t.)

Volt Job Search | You deserve a job you love | Volt.

The talent agency for digital creatives : Vitamin T.

I’ve reached out to most of these recruiters. Some of them have great job leads. Others seem to think I like coding HTML emails– which I wouldn’t mind for a certain pay rate. It’s good to have all of these links in one place. A lot of these people require simply an email with your resume as an application for their services. Some of them sought me out after the portfolio show and some were recommended by friends. I went to Aquent, The Creative Group and Creative Circle, thinking I covered all my bases. Thanks to Pete for getting me this list. He had success with Volt getting him a job at Xbox. Let me know which Agencies you like and how you are enjoying the job they got you.

  • Users and Task Flow: Sound Game

    August 22, 2013

taskflowforsoundgameHere’s my summary of my users for the Sound Game and a taskflow for someone who is playing the game. My next step is to use the style tile and create some screens for these tasks to make the walkthrough understandable.

Update 8-23-13: I forgot the taskflow for recording the sounds after each prompt. Must think about the interface  and technology.

  • First iteration of the Sound Game

    August 8, 2013

    styletileforthesoundgame

rolling-riffs1Here’s my style tile and layout for the first iteration of the game. I am spending less time in the “style” phase so I can get to some user testing and prototyping. The style is going to be more refined and have more attention to details and have themes for individual levels. I’ve been asking friends about how they would play a game where they adlib sounds. Prerecorded or play along with the game in real time? Next step in the prototype process: AfterEffects video. It’s working title is Rolling Riffs. I think it would be fun to use a musical instrument to come up with the sound effects.

  • Places I want to work at

    July 31, 2013

Research the types of places you’d like to work for (design agencies, private companies, tech organizations, etc.), then come up with a list of ~15-20 places in town you’d like to work for, then check out their careers section of their websites, and then apply there anyways even if you don’t see something you’re qualified for. –Paul Nissen

Places I want to work at

A list (in no order of preference) by Katarina Countiss, recent graphic design school grad.

    PopCap Games

and I love Tether for the reason that after applying for a job their automatic responder said:

In the meantime — we know the waiting’s hard — how about revisiting Salinger’s Nine Stories or maybe The Godfather, Part II. Good stories those. Thanks!

  • The Game of Sound

    July 30, 2013

    thesoundgame

This game inspired by Adventure Time and their reference to platformer games in a nonsensical happy irreverence. As a child, I used to make these games where you trace with your finger the track that your character goes, watching out for spikes and coins. With my renewed interest in sound, I present a new project in its infancy. I’m thinking I’ll animate all this in After Effects and then add the sound live and last using household objects that fit the visuals. A game video walkthrough! It’s gonna be fun. (After my first informal user test, I realized that the teleporter box needs to be better established.)

  • My First SVG

    July 26, 2013

I was at a coding jam session at Greenlake Forza last night with Paul Nissen, Seattle Central Creative Academy code-helper (for the lack of a better title). It turns out the kids at this year’s Web Design Bootcamp are getting schooled in Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). When they asked for help, I kind of shrugged, like what? Chris Sullivan mentioned it last year just once and we didn’t implement one or anything, we just ooohed and ahhhed.

Aside from some trouble with the school’s server, the kids are working their SVGs. This inspires me to implement one myself (on my snazzy portfolio site— in a trial header called headera.php, so it doesn’t show up on the other pages, but that’s another thing entirely.). Harder than it looks. Make a thing in Adobe Illustrator. Save as .svg. Put it in your images file. They are wild beasts, SVGs, scaling all over the place. Here are my attempts.

First one is the height of the nav and the text isn’t outlined in the svg, so it shows up as Times New Roman. Fascinating! The second one, I gave a height and width, but it’s huge.

In the end, it’s working because I told it where to go (negative top margin), how big it needs to be (using percentages) and outlined my text in Adobe Illustrator. And I made a back up .png for browsers that are too lazy to deal with something vector.

    header

Here’s my code. I lifted it from this informative website. And that website delivers a lot of other ways to implement these things, if you don’t want to put some javascript in your html.code

I must add my nav tags and some other good things (and notice how I don’t use a unordered list that’s weird…) so don’t judge my code too harshly.

But, yeah, I love SVGs now. They look real sweet on mobile!
